Family Law

Carney Appleby Law handles a full range of family law and domestic cases, including divorce, custody, child support, guardianship, domestic violence, modifications, and appeals.  Our family law attorneys are prepared to handle any and all aspects of your legal needs associated with the family. The head of our family law group, Diane Dornburg, is an experienced mediator with the Polk County Mediation Program.  We represent children as well as adults in contested custody cases.

In addition to the standard family law practice, Diane Dornburg has also been specially trained in both collaborative divorce and parenting coordination.

Collaborative Divorce

Collaborative Divorce is a positive alternative for settling parenting issues, property division and other matters when a marriage is dissolved.  By agreeing to create a resolution outside court, families avoid the stress of litigation. Both spouses and their collaborative law attorneys meet together with a shared goal of resolving all issues by agreement.  They may jointly consult experts to help them reach mutual decisions.   Collaborative Divorce allows families to maintain control of their lives.  Children benefit when parents can cooperate and interact respectfully.  A collaborative divorce ends a marriage while providing a constructive path for the family’s future.

Parenting Coordination

Parenting Coordination is a quasi-legal, mental health, alternative dispute resolution process that combines assessment, education, case management, conflict management and sometimes decision-making functions. It is a child-focused process for facilitating the resolution of disputes in a timely manner, educating parents about children’s needs, and with prior approval of the parties and the court, making decisions within the scope of the court order or appointment contract.
